Who I am

My name is Raciel Hernández, but everyone knows me as Rex. I've spent more than a decade as a language teacher and translator, and I speak six languages: Spanish, English, Japanese, Italian, French and Portuguese. I've worked in every kind of school, and as an independent online educator. I write all kinds of fiction and non-fiction, and in my free time (when I find it) I enjoy board games, video games and gastronomy. This site is my contribution to language education with the knowledge I've accumulated over the years.

What I do

Educator. I specialize in Japanese and English, and in the cultures that speak them — with historical and grammatical accuracy, and a high regard for my students' learning.

Translator. Technical and legal localization, mainly in the petroleum and artistic spheres, with experience in medical, narrative and poetic texts. My #1 priority is client satisfaction.

Creator. I talk about the topics that interest me — mostly languages and their minutiae — and I also make documentaries about internet-culture topics, while getting into fiction.

My trajectory

Since the launch of Babel Planet in 2015 — which would become the Rex Hernández Language Services channel — my goal has been to spread education about linguistics as a science and its intersections with modern culture and society. Through university, the working world, a pandemic and the invention of language models, my interest has always been how language connects with everything around us: how it transforms our world and how the world transforms language. My analyses come from a descriptivist, anti-colonial, anthropocentric perspective — with everything that entails.
